RELEVANT PROJECTS

JBA Consult Europe has developed Romania’s first Stormwater / Pluvial Flood Risk Management Plans for the municipalities of Pitești (2024–2025) and Ploiești (2026), with a strong emphasis on integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) into urban infrastructure. The main objective of the projects was to increase urban resilience to extreme weather events by promoting green infrastructure and sustainable interventions. In this regard, Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) and Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) played a central role, contributing to reducing flood risk, improving water quality and creating urban spaces better adapted to climate change. The effectiveness of these measures was analyzed through hydraulic modeling in various pre- and post-implementation scenarios.

The project aims to transform sites resulting from former historical mineral aggregate quarries into functional wetlands connected to the Timiș River. The investment involved a green infrastructure solution with multiple purposes: flood risk mitigation, tacklingthe effects of drought, increasing biodiversity and enhancing the landscape value of the land.

The proposed development involved creating connecting channels between the river and the wetlands, constructing gentle slopes to encourage the growth of wetland-specific vegetation, and creating microhabitats (islands, shallow water areas) to help restore local ecosystems.fThe project is one of the pilot studies proposed by ABA Banat as part of the European LAND4CLIMATE project, which analyzes the climate risks to which various pilot areas are exposed and aims to address the challenges associated with climate resilience by implementing nature-based solutions – NbS) on predominantly private land.

Within the project implemented for WWF Romania (2026), the objective was to restore the longitudinal connectivity of the Cras River, which has been affected by degraded hydraulic structures that fragmented the watercourse and obstructed the migration of aquatic species.

JBA Consult Europe developed a series of options based on hydraulic modelling, leading to the selection of the optimal solution for removing or adapting the existing structures in order to re-establish the ecological continuity of the river. The project contributed to impriving the ecological status of the river and promoted sustainable solutions for the restoration of aquatic ecosystems, in line with the principles of the Water Framework Directive and the EU Nature Restoration Law.

JBA Consult Europe prepared the Feasibility Study for the ecological restoration project in the Caslita wetland (Chilia veche commune, Tulcea County), with the main objective of improving the hydrological connectivity between the Pardina channel and the adjacent wetland areas.

The study, completed in 2024, developed and assessed multiple restoration options using advanced 1D-2D hydraulic modelling techniques (HECRAS) to evaluate system behaviour under varying hydrological conditions.

The project integrates nature-based solutions, including the creation of connection channels and the adaptation of existing morphology, contributing to the restauration of aquatic habitats, enhancement of biodiversity, and support of key ecosystem function within the wetland.

Implementation of the proposed solutions is expected to deliver significant medium and long term benefits, both ecologically through the recovery of natural ecosystems, and socio-economically by strengthening opportunities for sustainable development within the local community.


JBA participated in the implementation of three projects (won in partnership with EPMC, within POIM 2014 – 2020 framework, Priority Axis 4 – Biodiversity), including two projects located in the catchment areas managed by RBA Someș-Tisa (Someșul Mic River, Bistrița River) and one project located in the catchment areas managed by RBA Banat (Bega Veche River). Within RBA Someș-Tisa, both projects aimed to improve the longitudinal connectivity of two watercourses. In this respect, the existing obstacles have been considered and different options have been analysed to allow the longitudinal connectivity and migration of fish species. Within RBA Banat, the project is aimed at improving the degree of protection and conservation of biodiversity and restoration of degraded ecosystems. JBA Consult Europe contributed to the following deliverables: Options Analysis, Hydraulic Modelling Study, Feasibility Study, Vulnerability Analysis and Climate Change Risk, Support Studies for obtaining water managements permits.
